Response from Dr. McGovern
There are studies to suggest that you can acquire HCV through shared use of snorting straws - YES. Some of the information that supports this is an epidemiologic link. For example, looking at surveys of people, those who have shared straws have an increased risk of being HCV positive. This suggests that this particular behavior is a risk factor for acquiring infection. A recent study showed that HCV can be found in blood-tinged nasal secretions from the nose as well. Thus it is best not to share straws - although the risk is not near as great as sharing shooting equipment - whether it be needles, cotton, or cookers.....I have several patients who never shared a needle but did share cookers or cotton.... | |||||||||
