hepatitis b,cirrhosis and hiv
Nov 12, 2009

my spouse has been diagnose with all of the above diseases now his face is swelling is this and indicator that he is going thru liver failure he had a biopsy of liver last year and the cirrhosis was confirm did the hepatitis b gave him cirrhosis? and what is the life spam with a person that him fating this three conditions? he is only 52 thank you

Response from Dr. McGovern

Face swelling is not a common finding in advanced liver disease. It is usually swelling of the ankles that most people notice first. If he is having swelling of the face over time, his doctor will probably want to check for protein spilling into his urine.

I think your spouse would be a great candidate for HIV antiretroviral therapy that includes Truvada - a pill that contains two active drugs against HIV and hepatitis B. This would be a terrific combination for treatment of both viruses in combination with another drug for HIV. Truvada will clearly improve his liver health.

He should also have serial monitoring of his liver every six months and vaccination against hepatitis A if he has not been exposed. Also should get other routine immunizations...
