hep c hiv
Sep 27, 2009

hi. i have been successfully treated for hep c. but have cirrhosis now and i am suffering terribly with stomach problems . I asked the doc/registra could i have hiv/aids he said he doubts it as it would show in my LFT results. and dont worry about it, as i have been sustained responder for 4 years.. thks

Response from Dr. McGovern

If you have had a diagnosis of cirrhosis in the past, you should still have monitoring of your liver by ultrasound - particularly if your "stomach problems" include pain in your right upper abdomen. I would also consider obtaining an ultrasound if you are at risk for fatty liver (obesity, diabetes, high lipids)....

Your symptoms do not suggest HIV infection specifically to me. If you have never been tested, the CDC does recommend HIV testing for all patients as part of routine medical care.

However, I think your liver should be regenerating and improving since you were cured of your HCV infection quite some time ago - so the overall news is great! Your stomach problems may be related to something quite different - like simply heartburn...
