HVC Therapy:When to transfuse?
Aug 8, 2009

Is there a regular standard when an HVC patient undergoing INF/ribavirin therapy should undergo a transfusion? Like hemogolobin count, red blood cell count, etc. I cleared (heptimax test) a very high vl (9.9 million) at wk 5 of treatment.... now 5 wks to go to golden week 48, but I feel worse than I ever did -- which started quite bad (I'm not a crybaby pt ... went through v. aggressive chemo for CNS NHL lymphoma stage IV which was a piece of cake compared to interferon) thank you

Response from Dr. McGovern

Transfusions are not given; however, for patients who develop severe anemia, erythropoietin can be considered. This is a growth factor that helps red blood cells to increase.

Congrats on your great results!
