| Stage 4 Cirrhosis Jun 28, 2009 My mother 79 years old has stage 4 cirrhorsis and they are testing her to see if she could survive another open heart surgery. If she were to servive the open heart surgery how long would she live with the cirrhosis? I don't expect her to stop drinking. |

Response from Dr. McGovern
Patients can live several years with compensated cirrhosis. When the liver fails however, and people develop fluid in their belly (ascites) or bleeding in their esophagus (varices) or confusion (encephalopathy) then survival is much shorter. | |||||||||
