|Hep B test results...need explaining
Apr 21, 2009
I just got back my Hep B Surface test results and they are very vague. There are 3 columns "In Range", "Out of Range" & 'Reference Range".
Below "Out of Range" is the word "Borderline" and under "Reference Range" says "Non Reactive"...that's all which is listed. No numbers are shown.
My Primary Care physician wasn't that clear with me as he said I'm on the low end of borderline in terms of exposure, but I don't engage in any of the risk categories.
So from this, can you tell what my situation would be? My doctor told me about the vaccine Engerix B...but some think I have no exposure.
Some other in my company have the notion that the vaccine is not stable and I'm just real confused.
Thanks in advance for your help.

The hepatitis B surface antigen result should be reactive or non-reactive. I suspect that the preliminary test that was done was "borderline" in positivity; this means that a better confirmatory test should have been performed automatically - I suspect this would be nonreactive, particularly since you are not at risk.
I would suggest speaking to the laboratory supervisor to make certain that the testing is done correctly. Your doctor should ask if a confirmatory test was done. If not, have your blood sample sent again - perhaps to a laboratory focused in a large hospital in your area.
Once you know you are non-reactive and you don't have surface antibodies, the vaccine is excellent and is extremely protective.
