hiv/no spleen Mar 7, 2009 my son had spleen removed last july after car accident and now has been diagnosed with hiv. how will lack of spleen affect his hiv and health i am devistated. |

 Please refer your HIV specific questions to the HIV forum. However, I will say quickly that your son should be immunized against various infections. Your pediatrician will want to give him vaccines against pneumococcus, meningococcus, and H. influezae, if not already given. The removal of his spleen does put him at risk for bacterial infections but it does not necessarily affect his HIV disease status. There are great medications now for HIV. He will need to have prompt evaluation and treatment for fevers, which can be related to bacteria. The spleen is important in this regard. But I think he will do well with good monitoring and prompt intervention when he does get sick from time to time. | ||||||||
