Response from Dr. McGovern
I am assuming that your interferon and ribavirin therapy did not work. That is certainly disappointing, but there are new drugs in development as we speak. I suspect your liver is "compensated" because you were just treated with interferon therapy. If compensated, you can do well for several years. I would be certain to stay off alcohol; get any immunizations that you may need (hepatitis A, B, pneumovax, influenza, etc...) and ask your physician if you are near any academic centers that are doing clinical trials of new agents. Many of these trials are not studying patients with cirrhosis yet, but it would be good to have been evaluated at a major center that is doing research so you can get involved whenever the opportunity arrives. | |||||||||
