HCV positive Riba neg PCRneg
Aug 25, 2008
Hi, I had a needlestick of unknown source in 2004. I'm a nurse. My 3month & 6month test came back negative for HIV and Hep C on my 12 month test the HCV came back positive. Since then my RIBA and the PCR test came back negative. I've been tested yearly.I was seen by the specialist who told me I cleared the infection. My question is I'm not sure if I should say I have hepatitis C or just say I have HCV antibodies? I wanted to get a serrogate to try to have a baby.
Response from Dr. McGovern
If your RIBA is negative your HCV antibody by ELISA is a false positive. RIBA is the gold standard. This is reinforced by your negative PCR. I wouldn't say you cleared the virus. You never were infected if your RIBA is negative.
