Response from Dr. McGovern
If you are yellow from recent acquisition of HCV infection, then you have what we call "acute" hepatitis C and you are "jaundiced". Patients who have jaundice often clear the virus on their own. It is worth checking your HCV RNA over the next few weeks and to start treatment if your virus persists after about 12 weeks. Your chance of clearing the virus is excellent even if you don't clear it on your own. Cure rates with treatment are high in the setting of acute infection. Also be certain to be checked for other viruses, such as HBV and HIV. I would also get immunized for hepatitis A and B after you get better. | |||||||||
