Can you treat compensated cirrhosis?
Aug 8, 2008

Hi Dr. McGovern,

Can a person with compensated cirrhosis be considered for Hep C treatment seeing as their liver is severely damaged but still functional?

Response from Dr. McGovern

Patients with class A cirrhosis (compensated cirrhosis) can be treated.

Patients with decompensated cirrhosis/class B or C can NOT be treated with currently available HCV therapies. Decompensated disease includes history of ascites (fluid in the belly), variceal bleeding (bleeding from a burst plump blood vessel in the esophagus) and encephalopathy (confusion).

You will want to have very careful follow up while on treatment and careful monitoring of your blood tests. Best of luck.

Doc, can you pls interpret this?
hepatitis c
