|clearing hepatitis C infection
Jul 8, 2008
I know that some people infected with acute hepatitis end up clearing the infection on their own, without any treatment. Does being a woman improve, or hurt, my chances of clearing an acute hep C infection?
| Response from Dr. McGovern
There are some data that suggest that women more commonly clear acute Hepatitis C than men. Another predictor of clearance is the finding of symptoms and jaundice (turning yellow).
I follow my patients with serial HCV RNA tests to see what the outcome is over about 12 weeks. If they clear, I only check another HCV RNA later on to be certain that they have maintained this great response.
If they do not clear their virus, then I offer treatment since the cure rates are so high in the setting of acute infection.
