Hep A & B vaccination
Apr 13, 2008

Have had 1st injection. Is it acceptable to have the second in 5 days instead of 7 and then again in 14 days for the third shot?

Response from Dr. McGovern

I suspect you are a traveler and in need of rapid vaccination.

One dose of hepatitis A vaccine before travel is considered adequate by the CDC.

There is an accelerated vaccine schedule for hepatitis B of 0,7,14 days with a booster at about six months. There is some data on this accelerated schedule which is an alternative to more traditional immunization. There is no data on what you are suggesting so it is hard to advise beyond this. However, the bottom line is that HAV (acquired from contaminated food or water) is much more of a risk related to travel than HBV which is acquired from blood to blood exposure.

Good to go?
