Coinfection
Mar 28, 2008

Can you live a while with coinfection, possibly cirrhosis and HIV, if the HIV is under control, meaning undetectable? Been through Hep C treatment.

Response from Dr. McGovern

The answer is yes. I think the most important thing is to avoid any liver injury - no alcohol; no over the counter drugs/herbals unless you first discuss the safety of these with your doctor. Also get vaccinated against hepatitis A or B if you are not immune or previously exposed.

The fact that your HIV is suppressed is also great news since uncontrolled viremia can lead to harmful liver cytokines, like tumor necrosis factor (TNF).Keep up the good work.

Drug development for HCV is underway and hopefully in the next five years there will be other choices for you to try.

In the future, if you develop decompensated liver cirrhosis (eg, fluid in your belly for example, you will want to be referred to a transplant center that specializes in HIV/HCV coinfection.
