Viral load & genotype 1a
Nov 18, 2007

You previously answered a question as to what the genotypes for HCV are. However, I'm still un clear as to what is the "A" in genotype 1-A? Also, I have recently been told my viral load is slightly over 1 million. What does this mean exactly? Thank you. M-

Response from Dr. McGovern

Currently we don't pay much attention to whether you have genotype 1a or 1b. It only matters that you have genotype 1 infection with a high viral load. It is harder, but not impossible, to treat this type of infection.

In the future, we will probably pay more attention to subtypes (a or b) since with the newer drugs in development, it will probably matter.

Please help me understand my test results
