hepetitis c in infant
Nov 18, 2007

What is the average life span of an infant infected with hepititis c from birth?

Response from Dr. McGovern

1. First of all, to diagnose HCV in a baby, you need to look at virus itself since antibodies are passed naturally from the mother to baby. If someone checks only for antibodies, this can be misleading.

2. If a HCV antibody is positive after 18 months of life, then the baby itself is infected. If this is the case, many babies clear the virus on their own.

3. If the virus persists, children can be treated and tolerate the therapy much better than adults!
