Response from Dr. McGovern
If your wife has hepatitis B, I would get tested and if you are negative, I would also get vaccinated against hepatitis B. Your wife will need to see if she is chronically infected (eg, does she have hepatitis B surface antigen and does she have presence of virus, eg, HBV DNA) Your wife may have been infected perinatally; you will need to speak with her about any other risks to determine better as to whether you need HIV testing as well.Furthermore, there is a lot of confusion on hepatitis B testing and interpretation. I would be certain that her laboratories are clearly positive for chronic infection. There are many drugs that are very effective in suppressing HBV. | |||||||||
