What is the next step when Ribivron and interferon fails?
Response from Dr. McGovern
You will want to talk with your doctor about whether you should wait for new therapies for hepatitis C that are currently being studied. There are some very promising drugs on the horizon.
Also, you will want to ask if your liver disease is advanced. If so, then you may want to ask if you should go on "maintenance" therapy with low dose interferon. This approach is not yet approved but is currently being studied to see if chronic therapy with interferon can delay decompensation of liver disease. Preliminary results of this large four year study may be available by the end of the year.
In the meantime, do not drink alcohol which also leads to more fibrosis (scarring).
