|Hep C treatment
May 19, 2007
Dear Dr. McGovern, My Fiance was diagnosed with Hep C over 10 yrs ago. Since then he has been sober for 10yrs & no drugs. His dr. has suggested medication but he refuses since all of his tests are going very well & he is surprising healthy. My feeling is that he should be taking some type of vitamins to help keep his liver (& whatever else could be affected by Hep C)healthy but I don't know know what he should take. Could you please give me some suggestions? He won't take the meds but is willing to take vitamins. Thanks so much for your help!
Response from Dr. McGovern
Your fiance should consider a liver biopsy before he decides that he doesn't want any treatment. You cannot tell how much disease you have by blood tests or how you feel. You need to see how much scarring is present.
Also HCV can be transmitted sexually - but only rarely - about 1 to 2 percent of the time. Condoms are protective.
A general multivitamin and vitamin E would be fine, but he should discuss any intake of vitamins and over the counter medicines with his doctor as well.
