Hep.C.
May 19, 2007

My husband was diagnosed with Hep. C. and he believes that I cannot get it from him during sex. Is this true?

Response from Dr. McGovern

You can get HCV through sexual intercourse, but it is uncommon - about 1 to 2 percent.

If you husband does not have detectable virus (eg, has an antibody but no virus) then his is not infectious because his body cleared the infection. You will want counseling by his physician to be certain. You can discuss this with your husband. I counsel couples often. In the meantime, you can request that you use condoms - either male or female condoms.
