What is the particular Genotyping that is considered to be cureable and what, if any, HIV drugs should be avoided due to Hep C infection?
Response from Dr. McGovern
Hepatitis C comes in different genotypes. They are all potentially curable by therapy with interferon and ribavirin. However, some are easier to treat - like genotype 2 and 3.
I think the most important issue in treating HIV in a patient with hepatitis C is actually not the issue of which drugs to avoid, but more importantly, to discuss potential side effects related to medications. I think this is not emphasized enough. A patient needs to understand that the onset of right upper quadrant pain in the belly, nausea, loss of appetite, dark urine, can all be signs that the liver is being affected by the meds. Then the patient must contact their doctor as soon as possible.
