hep A and B vaccination
Apr 3, 2007

Who can benefit from Hep A and B vaccination? Are they recommended for everyone?

Thank you

Response from Dr. McGovern

Hepatitis A vaccine is recommended for people traveling to countries where hepatitis A infection is common, in injection drug users, people with liver disease, and men who have sex with men. It is also used in epidemic outbreaks of contaminated food or water.

Hepatitis B vaccine is recommended in men who have sex with men, patients on dialysis, injection drug users, and people with chronic liver disease. It is also recommended for people who are household or sexual contacts of a person with chronic hepatitis B infection. Children in many countries (eg US, Taiwan) get hepatitis B vaccine as part of their routine immunizations. This has already led to decreased morbidity from liver disease in Taiwan.

Both vaccines are also recommended in HIV infected persons.

Both vaccines are very effective.
