high levels of ALT Feb 11, 2007 I had an occupational exposure and received my first blood work about 6 days later. I tested negative for Hep C and Hep B but my Alt levels were at 43. The lab report said this is normal but other information I have read says that this is high. What is your opinion? Could this be a sign of Hep B or C infection? |

 Yes some studies are now suggesting that a normal ALT should be considered 30 in a male and 19 in a woman. However, laboratory results need to be interpreted in the laboratory they were drawn. Furthermore, in the setting of acute hepatitis, the liver function tests usually become significantly abnormal - eg, they are not subtle. I would simply have further follow up of your liver function tests which will become abnormal in the setting of acute hepatitis. | ||||||||
