Dear Doctor Barbara, I am a male of 35 years age I tested Hbs Ag +ve in October-2005, then I took some herbal medicines in INDIA. After that I got tested by an allopathic doctor on 30.01.2006. Please evaluate my results dated 30.01.2006 HBc-IgM- 6.2 IU/ml Hbe-Ag - 0.36 S/CO Anti Hbe-total- 4.7CO/S Hepatitis B Virus DNA PCR (quantative) 675 IU/ml Scanning Report- LIVER-normal size, coarse echopattern noted, no focal mass lesion seen, intra hepatic biliary radicles normal. LEFT KIDNEY-10.3X4.5cm, shows normal size shape & position, evidence of calculus measuring 4.0mm seen, no dilatation of pelvicalyceal system is seen, cortico medullary differentiation maintained. -no free fluid, -no para-aortic nodes

WBC-7,800 PER cumm HAEMOGLOBIN-14.2 SGOT-20 IU/L SGPT-10 IU/L GGTP-15 IU/L Since then I gave up alcohol & all non vegetarian food. And I am on ADEFOVIR daily 1 tablet from April-2005 till today. My doctor advised to take it for 9 months. My question is can I have occasional alcohol (once a week) & can I take fish, eggs. I am taking milk regularly, should I give up milk as a precaution. Also will my blood ever show Hbs Ag ve ?

Please advise. I am very much worried & I got my wife & children all vaccinated after they are found to be Hbs Ag negative.

Thanking you SKP

Response from Dr. McGovern

It looks like you are having a nice response to the adefovir. I would want to treat you for at least six months after your hepatitis B e antibody became positive (seroconversion). I would drink little alcohol (eg 1 drink per day at most) and only after you finish your treatment. You don't need to restrict your diet if you are not cirrhotic.
