My niece has just gotten diagnoised with HCV. She is only 17. She don't want anyone to know not even me. My mom told me in confidience. Is there any way to make her feel more confortable about discussing the issue? I want to be there for her and help her through it. Also, could someone tell me how she might have gone about contracting this virus? She doesn't use drugs. Could it come from sex etc.?

Hepatitis C is contracted mainly through injection drugs, but also can be contracted sometimes through sex; blood transfusions prior to 1992; needlestick injuries of healthcare workers...
She will need to be educated and counseled more by her health care professional. She can also get information on hepatitis C from the CDC (www.cdc.gov) or through her local public health department.
