HCV/Not In Archives Nov 3, 2006 Hello Docter. Honestly speaking, how bad is HCV, is it looked as a terminal illnes or one that just prevents you from drinking and forces you to live a healthy lifestyle..My dad just got diagnosed...and finally, do you think a cure is on the way, one that works for more then 50% of people? THANK YOU |

Response from Dr. McGovern
Hepatitis C does NOT cause disease in all people. It can cause no disease, mild, moderate or severe hepatitis, or cirrhosis with bad scarring. The disease course is worse in people who continue to drink alcohol. The current treatments cure more than 50 percent of patients with genotype 1 infection and more than 65 percent of those with genotypes 2 or 3 infection. More drugs are in development including protease inhibitors for HCV. |
