How long would a person with both Hep C and HIV live for before experiencing noticible symptoms "assuming they are not recieving any treatment", and what would the symptoms be??And finally how long would this person live for on average..please be truthful.

Response from Dr. McGovern

The natural history of hepatitis C takes usually decades to develop into significant liver disease. Concomitant HIV can make the progression of disease faster.

The natural history of HIV varies dramatically from person to person. On occasion a patient can progress rapidly - or a person can be a "long term non-progressor" HOwever, most patients live for 7 to 11 years without treatment. However, the treatments available now are so much better - we even have a one-pill regimen that combines three drugs into one pill.

So if you haven't been tested and are concerned about either infection - it is best to get tested so you can start taking care of yourself with the help of a good doctor.
