Is chronic hepatitis b or d possible if hbsag is negative?

Hepatitis B surface antigen is positive in 99.9 percent of the time. Rarely - very rarely - the surface antigen can be negative and a patient can have active disease. This is due to a rare mutant that does not make surface antigen. This virtually never happens.
