High SGOT and SGPT Counts
Jun 7, 2006

I am 36 years old male working for the police force in India.Around 3-4 months back I experieance slight fever, fatigness and coughing.Subsequently i got some tests done as advised by my Dr. such as LFT,Hepatitis viral test, Sonography of liver, splen, kidney, pancreas ,LFT follow-up,protien electrophoresis, serum iron & total iron BC,serum-cerrulo plasmin, anti nuclear factor, auto immune liver panel, canca + Panca etc. All the test results were NEGATIVE except SGOT and SGPT counts which always comes on the higher side ranging SGOT:53 to 65 and SGPT: 69 to 120.

Could u pls advise, I am a non-smoker and occasional drinker with 2-3 pegs at a time.

Response from Dr. McGovern

Liver function tests that are persistently abnormal should have further evaluation. Your laboratory testing appears to be extensive. If you have risk factors for steatohepatitis (fatty liver)(for example high cholesterol or triglycerides, diabetes, obesity) I would consider talking to your physician about a liver biopsy.
