i have hep c, would it be okay to have sex with my lesbian partner.
| Response from Dr. McGovern
Hepatitis C is not easily transmitted through sexual intercourse. When heterosexual monogamous couples have been studied, the risk is about 1 to 3 percent. In HIV-infected men who have sex with men, there have been five case reports of outbreaks of acute hepatitis C in various countries around the world. Some of the transmission has been associated with other sexually transmitted diseases, such as syphilis. In general, there is some suggestion that the risk of sexual transmission of hepatitis C is increased with traumatic tears and with the presence of genital ulcer diseases.
The risk is low. However, as always, you need to discuss your HCV status with your partner to make a decision that is comfortable for both of you.
