hepatitis A
Oct 24, 2005

what is hep A and total AB? Can is be passed by breastfeeding?

how can it be cured?

Response from Dr. Dieterich

People rarely ask about hepatitis A, thanks! It is spread by food or water. There was a recent report where hepatitis A was spread by Mexican green onions and killed 3 people of over 400 who got infected. It is excreted in the stool, but no likely in breastmilk, although, I dont know for sure about breast milk. There is very little data about it. The good news is that it never becomes chronic or relapses. It always goes away so there is no treatment for it. Good hygiene and careful cooking are the ways to prevent its spread. There is a very effective vaccine for it and in some states hep A vaccine is also mandatory for children. It is particularly fatal in people who have hep C so hep A vaccine is mandatory in people who have hep C or any type of liver disease. Stay safe and get vaccinated! DTD
