|How Long Can You Live with Hepatitis B
Mar 28, 2001
My Aunt has been undergoing testing for artery problems and they told her she has HBV. She is 65 and has been a widow since 1989. He died from Liver Cancer. Could she of contracted the disease from him and not know it until now? 3/23/01

Yes.Hepatitis B is sexually trasmitted.Chronic hep.B is a predisposing factor for the development of cirrhosis and hepatocellular carcinoma. The majority of the acute hepatitis are anicteric(the patient does not develop jaundice); and may run undiagnosed. You don't state clearly if she has chronic HBV or if she cleared the virus.Up to 97-98% of cases clear the virus naturally. It is common that patients that develop chronic HBV, are diagnosed late when they develop symptoms of more advanced liver disease. The HBV may be detected even when cancer is diagnosed.
