Can recurring staph infections be non-hiv related?
Sep 25, 2005

Dr. McGovern,

Thanks for reading my question.

I've had recurring folliculitis all over my body in random locations for the last 4 months. It's mostly on my chest and back and gets worse when I sweat. I haven't tried any antibiotics yet, just antibacterial soap (e.g. safeguard).

Is it still possible that the recurring folliculitis not related to hiv and is probably coming back because I haven't treated it? Have you heard of or seen anything like this before?

Thanks so much for your help!

Response from Dr. McGovern

Recurrent folliculitis can certainly occur. I would see your primary care doctor to discuss treatment or see a dermatologist.
