| what causes the false + results? Jun 28, 2005 hi, recently, i had my medical exam wherein i got a postive result in HbsAg using test kits. the test was done trice using the same brand and the result is always positive, but when they used other brand, it appears to be negative. the test was proceed to hepatitis profile, and the result was non-reactive for HbsAg, count is 0.214 and cut off value is 0.500. can you give me some of the causes why some test kits give False + results? hope to hear from you, thanks:) |

Response from Dr. McGovern
All hepatitis B surface antigen tests which are read as positive need to undergo a second step procedure to "confirm" the positive result. This is because there can be a non-specific antibody reaction that creates the positive test as opposed to specific antibodies in someone who has hepatitis B. | |||||||||
