I was getting a blood draw and the nurse after swabbing my skin used his ungloved fingers to feel my artery before he inserted the needle. This incident bugged me since I was getting the draw as my six month test for a possible Hep C exposure and maybe am a little "paranoid" about possible exposures. Is there any reason to worry about this incident, or should I just "relax" as my friends told me. Thanks.
Response from Dr. McGovern
I would certainly not worry about the incident you describe. The healthcare worker should certainly not unglove due to the need for "universal precautions" which protect the healthcare worker from acquiring blood-borne diseases.
