Can the virus be dormant for 43 years?
May 29, 2005

My mother was recently diagnosed with hep-c. She received a blood transfusion 43 years ago when I was born. Could she have received the virus at that time and should I be tested too?

Response from Dr. McGovern

If your mother has no other risks, yes she may have gotten hepatitis C at that time. What may have happened is that she clear the virus on her own and that is why she has done well. Her infection may not be dormant. It may have resolved since she was young when she got infected.

If she passed it onto you I would be surprised - I would still get testing to be sure.
