What is the risk of transmiting the disease ( Hep B) to my future children or for them having any handicaps such as physical deformities or mental retardation?
Response from Dr. McGovern
The risk of passing it to your children is low since infants receive passive immunization and vaccine at birth. You simply need to discuss your status with your OB/GYN doctor so this is done quickly at delivery.
Also there is a small study presented at the liver research meetings (AASLD 2004) which suggested that giving lamivudine to pregnant women who have high viral loads may be helpful. This is new data and it has not been formally published so it is up to you and your physician to discuss this further based on your viral load.
Hepatitis B does not cause birth defects.
