SCARED girl about HCV risks
Jan 30, 2005

Is someone who snorts cocaine alot more likely to catch Hep C through a straw than someone who rarely does? What are the odds really of catching hep C this way? Should someone who has shared a straw with an infected person, but did not have the straw directly passed to them still be tested for HCV? thanks alot!

Response from Dr. McGovern

Sharing straws is defined as a risk factor due to concerns regarding blood contaminated straws exposed to mucous membranes of the nose. If a risk is associated with a particular activity, of course the risk is greater if you do it more often.

If you have shared straws, I think it is best to get tested.
