ALT test?
Oct 22, 2004

My husband had a routine blood test done in order to evaluate high blood pressure. During a routine blood test do they test for liver enzyme levels or is that something special? My husband was put on Diovan for his blood pressure.... and his blood work came back okay, but I am just curious if they routinely test for the liver enzymes and how long it would take for them to be elevated after infection? Thank you.

Response from Dr. McGovern

Liver function tests are simple blood tests which do not cost a great deal of money. They are ordered routinely if there are any concerns about drug induced toxicity.

Incubation periods for various hepatitis viruses vary so you would have to be more specific.
