HEP B core AB total
Oct 6, 2004

My husband of 17 years has high total cholesterol (350+) and was given Lipitor for approx. one month, then had a liver panel done. Lab results reflected concerns to Dr., so a Hep A and B test was ordered. Lab results are as follws: HEP A AB TOTAL: negative HEP A VIRUS AB IGM: nonreactive HEP B SURFACE AG: negative HEP B SURFACE AB HBSAB, QT: <1 (1) negative HEP B CORE AB TOTAL: positive HCV AB: negative

His doctor says "no big deal". How can testing positive on any liver issue be OK? We ahve two small children in the home, so I'm concerned for them becoming infected (they received their immunization). Plus my husband drinks one to four glasses of wine per day. No IV drug use ever, monogamous, not in medical profession. Please advise of an appropriate next step. THANK YOU VERY MUCH!

Response from Dr. Dieterich

It is not at all uncommmon. He has had hepatitis B in the past and is now cured. If his enzymes are elevated, I would order e Ag and e Ab and HBV DNA just to be sure, but almost certainly, he is cured. He could have gotten the infection even before he knew you. Wish him luck! DTD
