HBV help
Sep 29, 2004

When I first started dating my boyfriend, almost two years ago, he told me straight away that he was a carrier of Hepatitis B. He had contracted the virus as a young child when he lived in Hong Kong. I started the course of three vaccinations straight away. However, during this period, he performed unprotected oral sex on me once.

After the course of vaccinations, my antibody blood test came back at 105. I am not sure what this means, but my boyfriends consultant said that if my antibodies are over 100, I am 100% protected for 5 years.

The thing that has been worrying me for a while now, is that I may have contracted the virus from the unprotected oral sex I received before my vaccinations were complete. Is it possible that I can have a 105 antibody result and still have the virus?

Response from Dr. McGovern

I would simply ask your physician to go over the test with you. The test itself will tell your doctor if you are antibodies from vaccination or because you got the infection itself.

Hepatitis core IgG should be negative and surface antibodies should be positive if you are immune from vaccination itself. Dr. McGovern
