contractin hepatitis & herpes
Sep 29, 2004

I contracted herpes & hepatitis from the same person, i think. Does contracting herpes increase the chance of contracting hepatitis? In other waords, could i have contracted hepatitis from the herpes lesion at the time of contact? i don't know of any other way i may have had blood contact during sex. Do either of these contribute to the development of the HIV virus? aslo i am stage one (HepC) and have not been prescribed meds. what should i look for as far as progression of the disease or symptoms? Thank you for your response.

Response from Dr. McGovern

There isn't a lot of information on whether herpes can increase your risk of getting hepatitis viruses. We do know that sexual transmission of hepatitis C can occur although it is a low risk.

You may have no symptoms as hepatitis C progresses. That is why it is important to follow-up with your doctor on a regular basis and to get a repeat biopsy in the future if you are not going on treatment to be certain that you stay "stage 1". Most hepatologists do a repeat liver biopsy every 3-5 years. Dr. McGovern
