Response from Dr. McGovern
Your friend has chronic hepatitis B as determined by the surface antigen test. However, the negative E antigen and the positive E antibody and normal liver function tests are consistent with an "inactive carrier state". Your friend will need serial follow-up to be certain that he or she does not revert to a more active disease state. He or she should also be vaccinated for hepatitis A if they have not had this infection. If you are a household contact or sexual partner, I would get the hepatitis B immunization series.
