| Alcohol affects on the liver Jun 21, 2004 Hi ]Considering an average human male, what course would prove most harmful to the liver, alcohol consumption daily(2-3 1 oz alocholic drinks) or a once a week binge drinker (9-10 1 oz drinks). An educated guess would be most appreciated. Thank you. |

Response from Dr. McGovern
For your question on alcohol consumption, my educated guess would be that binge drinking would be most harmful. However, if you have underlying hepatitis C infection, it is not clear how much daily alcohol is truly safe. My other educated guess would be that three drinks a day may not be safe enough. I would review your alcohol intake with your physician to discuss this further. You may also want to pursue a liver biopsy if you have active hepatitis B or C infection since alcohol and viral hepatitis can be a combination that leads to significant scarring.
