How did I get Hep C & how is it transmitted to others?
Jun 17, 2004

how does a person get hep c? Or any hepatitis if he/she never used needles? And can it be transmitted by kissing even if one is clear from it after having been treated? What is safe sex in regard to Hepatitis, especially Hep. C, the form i had.

Response from Dr. McGovern

Hepatitis C is mainly transmitted by exposure to blood. This can occur through use of injection drugs most commonly. In the past this used to occur also through blood transfusions before the testing of the blood supply.

Dialysis patients are also at risk for hepatitis C. Health care workers can get the infection through accidental needlesticks.

A mother with hepatitis C can sometimes pass the virus onto their baby at birth.

Finally, sexual transmission of hepatitis C can occur although it is not common. Safe sex would mean use of barrier protection, like a condom. You can't get hepatitis C from kissing. However, you should avoid sharing razors or toothbrushes that might have had blood on them from a person who has hepatitis C.

I hope this is helpful. Dr. McGovern
