cord blood hepatitis core antibody positive
Jun 13, 2004

Dear Doctor,

I had a Hepatitis B vaccination about 10 years ago, then I got it enhanced in 2001. In 2002, I got pregnant. My prenatal screen showed HbsAg negative.

Three months after delivered my baby, the cord blood results came as HbcAb positive and HBsAg negative. I went to hospital and got myself tested. I have only HbsAb and HbcAb positive.

My question is: WHAT DOES THIS MEAN? WILL MY BABY BE OK? IF I HAVE TO GET HER TESTED, WHAT SHOULD BE CHECKED?

Thank you so much!

Response from Dr. McGovern

Your baby will be fine. Your blood results are positive for hepatitis B core antibody and surface antibody which suggests past natural infection. However, this infection is not active since your antigen is negative. Therefore, you would not be able to pass on the infection itself to your baby.

Congratulations of your baby. Relax and enjoy motherhood!

Dr. McGovern
