Response from Dr. McGovern
The nice thing about treating hepatitis C is that many patients are "cured" of their infection with either pegylated interferon alfa 2a (Pegasys) or pegylated interferon alfa 2b (PegIntron). Both are used with ribavirin. Patients with "easy to treat" genotypes like genotype 2 or genotype 3 can be treated with 6 months of therapy and be cured in a large proportion of patients. Genotype 1 is more common but is more difficult to treat and requires about 48 weeks of therapy. Genotype 4 seems to be easier to treat than genotype 1 but harder than genotypes 2 or 3. Not much is known about response rates with other genotypes. Dr. McGovern | |||||||||
