My husband is on HIV pos, on pegasus after relapsing on the peg-intron. His doctor said his numbers are going down and they won't know anything for 12 weeks. Is the virus supposed to get undetectable on maintenance? I thought maintenance was so the virus wouldn't get any worse. Could you please explain? Thank you.

Maintenance treatment is usually used for people who have not responded to full dose peg plus ribavirin. Normally patients are treated for 24 weeks and then if still PCR positive put on maintenance, if their biopsies are severe, that is stage 3 or 4. Maintenance dose of peg is half dose or 90 mcg of Pegasys and 1/3 dose or 0.5 mcg/kg of Pegintron without ribavirin. We have had some people become undectectable on maintenance, but we usually don't expect it. Good luck! DTD
