Can you contract Hep C from a straw????
Mar 17, 2004

About two weeks ago I did some coke and used the same straw with a person exposed with hepatitis C. I would like to get tested ASAP should I wait 4 more weeks? Would you consider this a high risk contact especially, if I was bleeding from inside the nose? Does the person exposed have to be bleeding from the nose also? Thank you for your attention in this matter.

Response from Dr. Dieterich

Oh, that kind of straw! Yes you can! That is a risk that many people don't appreciate. There may be enough blood on the straw to transmit HCV. 2 weeks is too early to test but 6 weeks is a good idea. If you really want to know, ask for a HCV RNA level. Next time use a condom! DTD
