Dr. Dieterich
Jan 5, 2004

My husband is has Hep C and is HIV pos. He went through 48 weeks of peg intron therapy, tested undetectable for Hep C one month later. However, he just saw his HIV doctor three months later and the doctor said his liver number was 120. This is high. Does this mean the Hepatitis is back or is it too early to tell? If he has to be retreated, what is the procedure and what is the cure rate if he has HIV? Please answer. Thank you for your support.

Response from Dr. Dieterich

The only way to know is to do the HCV RNA test. Re treatment is reasonably successful in HIV patients if they responded the first time as in HIV negative patients. Take heart, he can be re treated! DTD
